While the movie garnered rave reviews when it released a week earlier, My Name Is Khan (MNIK) gradually lost its audiences of late, according to reports.
The SRK-Kajol starrer, which earned Rs.90.2 crore in the opening week, witnessed a considerable drop in its collections this week.
When My Name Is Khan got released on 12 Feb, it got a natural hype and promotions due to Shiv Sena commotions. Now that things seem to have cooled down, looks like audiences interests over the film have receded as well.
According to a source from a multiplex, MNIK did very well on the weekend due to the curiosity factor, with virtually packed houses, but weekday collections fell to around 35 per cent. While it is still holding on in the metros, the film is falling in the non-metros and smaller cities because of the serious nature of the movie and the subject.
While an official of another multiplex stated that MNIK is suited for a multiplex audience rather than single screens and that is where it has lost out. Besides, when compared to 3 Idiots the weekday occupancies for MNIK are much lower. As of now the multiplex owners are keeping their fingers crossed, hoping that the film will favour the collections this weekend.
Considering the finer aspects about the films collections, MNIK said to have grossed Rs 47 crore from Indian box-office in its opening weekend, which is almost half of 3 Idiots' first weekend earning of Rs 70 crore. Also, MNIK has done better overseas, grossing Rs 43 crore compared to Rs 20 crore for 3 Idiots in opening weekend earnings.
However, film trade analyst Komal Nahata seems to have different opinion. He said, "The movie has performed well overseas but is certainly not the highest Bollywood grosser so far."
My Name Is Khan is based on the love story of Rizwan Khan and Mandira, set in the backdrop of post 9/11 US attack.
