Mozart of Madras, Rahman got international recognition with the song Jai Ho. The song from Jai Ho got him two prestigious Oscars. However much to the shock of all, music director Josyabhatla Rajasekhara Sharma speaking to scribes, made a startling revelation saying Jai Ho was not composed by Rahman.
It is known that a few weeks back maverick director Ram Gopal Varma also revealed the same thing. He said the song was not composed by Rahman but by famous singer Sukhwinder Singh. Now Josyabhatla threw more light on it recollecting the entire incident.
He said Sukhwinder Singh composed the song Jai Ho for the film Taal. He said Subhash Ghai was strict in time and Rahman took more time and did not compose the title tune. He added that Subhash Ghai got angry with Rahman and Rahman called Sukhwinder Singh and told him to play one tune to Subhash Ghai who was furious.
Subhash Ghai was angry after listening to the Jai Ho song tuned by Sukhwinder Singh and called Rahman and blasted him for not giving the tune according to the situation. Rahman who landed in Mumbai, asked whether Sukhwinder did not play the other tune and promised to do the same in person in front of him.
He said Rahman with in one hour timespan to reach Subhash Ghai from Mumbai airport composed the title song Taal Se Taal Milaa. Rahman took the Jai Ho song from Sukhwinder and used for Slum Dog Millionnaire and it won the Oscars. He said Rahman can tune songs are supersonic speed and recalled how he tuned Kandukondein song for Kandukondein Kandukondein (Priyuraalu Pilichindi).
He said Veturi Sundararammurthy and Rahman were very close and Veturi had good knowledge about Ragas. Lyrics have been completed in Tamil by Vairamuthu and Veturi in Telugu simultaneously. He told Rahman that this song will be good in Nalinakanti raga. Rahman had no idea about Nalinakanti raga at that time as it is a very rare raga. He said Rahman used to spend one hour with his team.
He said Rahman doesn't work till evening as he wakes up late and starts only in the night after interacting with everyone in the evening. As he was free at that time, he used to discuss various songs and compositions. He said Rahman inquired about Nalinakanti raga and asked those who knew to work out by giving them one hour time. He said everyone got excited as Rahman will use their tunes for the song. He said when everyone started singing classical songs, Rahman stopped and asked them to talk about the Raga. He inquired about Upper Tonic and Lower Tonic and swaras. He said Rahman was the only person who used ascending and descending order and did a full song. No one got that thought till Rahman used it.
Even in Mudhalvan (Oke Okkadu), he used reetigowla raga and composed the song Chilaka. This speaks volumes of Rahman's talent.
