The doyen of Indian cinema Kamal Haasan floated his own political party the Makkal Needhi Maiam in 2018 and made heads turn by getting a good vote share in the Parliamentary elections of 2019. He formed a third front against he ADMK and the DMK during the Tamil Nadu Assembly Elections 2021 and was expected to make a much better if not a similar impact.
However, the elections in which the DMK emerged victorious with a majority, came as a rude awakening to Kamal and his MNM. The party fared poorly in most constituencies and ranked after Seeman's Naam Thamizhar Katchi.
Following the dismal results, an exodus is taking place in the MNM with frontline functionaries such as Vice President R. Mahendran, Santhosh Babu general secretary – headquarters, Padmapriya, A G Maurya, Thangavel, Umadevi, C.K. Kumaravel, Sekar and Suresh Iyer quitting the party.
Today, the MNM has suffered another blow as the party's state general secretary, Muruganantham has also resigned from his post and also the basic membership of the party. He has told the press that Kamal's autocratic decision-making hurt the chances of the party as well as the fact that more than 100 seats were allotted to weak coalition parties.
Muruganandham has also added that fifteen other functionaries have resigned with him and more will quit the MNM in the coming days. Kamal has so far not reacted to this.
