Mumbai Rains Kills 18 After Walls Collapse

Two separate wall collapses in Kurar and Kalyan have claimed the lives of 18 in Mumbai following the heavy rains. In Malad East, 16 people died and many were severely injured after a wall collapsed on an encampment of huts. It is feared that more victims are stuck under the debris. Maharashtra CM Devendra Fadnavis announced that the family of the deceased would receive Rs. 5 lakh each. The death toll in the state has risen to 26 out of which four were killed due to electrocution.
The state government also announced a public holiday in Mumbai due to the prediction by the India Meteorological Department (IMD) of extremely heavy rains in the city.
Educational institutions will be closed today and officials have also advised people to stay at home. Rail and air services have also been disrupted due to the rainfall with 52 flights canceled and several diverted. The storm is expected to continue till July 5th.
