Mumbai Police Review

After that unexpected downer in 'Cassanovva', gifted director Roshan Andrews is back to his elements in the new movie  'Mumbai Police'. An emotional thriller, it's nothing like you've seen in Mollywood movie thus far. A plot-driven movie,  it stands tall for its substance and most significantly, for the sparkling implementation of the written material by the director to  create a product that's nothing short of brilliant.

Mumbai Police merge, friendship,  love, lust and betrayal, resulting in a intoxicating cocktail that hits your mind. The movie has Prithviraj as Antony Mosses, ACP of Kochi who was assigned to crack the murder of his closest friend  Aryan John Jacob(Jayasuriya), another ACP of Mattancherry. Aryan was hit by a bullet while he was delivering a speech after receiving a gallantry award.  But as Antony unearthed the vital clues to the murder and the person behind the deed, he met with an accident which took much away from his memory. Now a reformed man after his hospitalization, Antony hardly realizes his close aids and relatives.    His superior and his closest friend in the  force, Farhan Aman (Rahman), the commissioner  is but convinced that Antony can make another try to find out once again, what he had revealed before his disastrous injury.  What follows thereafter is a cat and mouse game between what Antony was and what he is,before and after  his  life changing accident.

Mumbai Police is  largely engaging for its plot and also the execution of the written material. The strong narrative by Sanjai-Bobby maintains focus, without diversifying into unwanted subplots , making it one of the most well written scripts in recent times. Besides, there are ample twists and turns in a crafty, delicate storylines that catch you completely unaware. The beauty of the film lies in the fact that it's so damn unpredictable, so unforeseeable even in its second hour. On the flipside, the movie loosens up quite a bit towards the middle of the second hour. And the climax may not satisfy the logic of some, who can't decipher the depth of some relationships.

The director in Roshan seems to have done his homework well. The hard work and expertise of the director are also echoed by the entire star cast. Prithviraj has undoubtedly evolved into an intense, character-driven actor and delivers yet another sparkling performance in the police uniform and you don't draw parallels subsequently.  Rahman, once again, proves that there's a lot of talent in him that needs to be tapped.  Jayasuriya  shines in a role that seems tailor-made for him.  The newcomers like Hima Davis brings alive their characters with needed energy, while Kunchan has got another role to treasure.

The technical sides are fine and support the quality of the film that reminds us of the takings of English emotional thrillers. Diwakar behind camera is spot on target while Mahesh Narayan uses the finest cuts to adequately pace the film. As usual, the BG scores by Gopisundar give the firepower to the thriller to hold your attention unabated.

Mumbai Police is undoubtedly one of the finest works from Roshan and his crew. A rare piece of brilliance that Mollywood can be proud of...
