The state's levy of entertainment tax on top of GST has been severely opposed by the film fraternity. The members of Tamil Film Producers Council recently placed their plea to negate the tax impostion. This did not bear fruit as the state justified the tax imposition complementing the rise of ticket cost by 25%.

While the producers council is calling for a regression in rates back to Rs.120 for AC theatres and Rs.80 for non AC theatres, multiplex owners have seemed to play a spoilsport by refuting to change their existing charges of Rs.160 as they release movies in Hindi and English attracting more tax.

With this disconcerting stubborness from multiplexes, the probability pf TNPC's efforts to bring down costs seem vague. As big movies including Vijay’s ‘Mersal’ in the pipeline, film fraternity and fans expect the issue to be resolved as soon as possible.
