Disney unveiled the first trailer for "Mufasa: The Lion King" on Monday, directed by Barry Jenkins. This music-filled film serves as both an origin story and sequel to Jon Favreau’s 2019 photorealistic adaptation of The Lion King, based on the beloved 1994 Disney animated classic.
Accompanying the trailer release is the announcement that Blue Ivy Carter will make her film debut voicing Kiara, the daughter of King Simba and Queen Nala, while her mother, Beyoncé Knowles-Carter, will reprise her role as Nala from the 2019 film.
Scheduled for release on December 20th, the film delves into the backstory of Simba’s father, Mufasa, depicting him as an orphan who evolves into a wise, powerful, and compassionate ruler.
The official logline describes the film as follows: “Mufasa: The Lion King enlists Rafiki to relay the legend of Mufasa to young lion cub Kiara, daughter of Simba and Nala, with Timon and Pumbaa lending their signature schtick. Told in flashbacks, the story introduces Mufasa as an orphaned cub, lost and alone until he meets a sympathetic lion named Taka the heir to a royal bloodline. The chance meeting sets in motion an expansive journey of an extraordinary group of misfits searching for their destiny their bonds will be tested as they work together to evade a threatening and deadly foe.”
The title character, Mufasa, is voiced by Aaron Pierre, while Kelvin Harrison Jr. voices his brother, Scar (credited as Taka). Billy Eichner and Seth Rogen reprise their roles as Timon and Pumbaa, respectively. The star-studded cast also includes Donald Glover as Simba, Tiffany Boone as Sarabi, and Mads Mikkelsen as Kiros.
Lin-Manuel Miranda is composing the film’s songs, adding to the legacy of musical talent associated with The Lion King. Jenkins, speaking at CinemaCon in Las Vegas, teased the film as an “expansive adventure” featuring both epic storytelling and comedic moments, promising audiences a captivating experience in theaters.
