Mr and Mrs Mahi Review
Mr and Mrs Mahi tells the story of a young couple who discover their shared love and passion for cricket. The film follows their journey as they pursue their dreams together, facing and overcoming numerous hurdles along the way to achieve success.
Story:
Mahendra (Rajkummar Rao) and Mahima (Janhvi Kapoor) much to their surprise discover that they share common passion for the game of cricket. As it turns out, Mahendra is a failed cricketer and Mahima, an avid gully cricker becomes doctor due to pressure from her parents. Where their passion for cricket leads to and how Mahendra's father Hardayal (Kumud Mishra), Mahima's parents Trilok Gupta,Kalpana Gupta (Purnendu Bhattacharya, Yamini Das) react form rest of the narration.
Analysis:
Rajkummar Rao performed well in the role of a person who is a failed cricketer and how his behavior changes when a woman takes a lead and marches ahead of him. He showed subtle variations in his emotions and expressions and slipped into the role effortlessly.
Janhvi Kapoor is good and showcased her talent as a cricketer but failed when it comes to showing strong emotions. It is high time, she concentrates on getting her emotions and expressions right. The chemistry between Rajkummar Rao and Janhvi is good.
Kumud Mishra played the role of the father who is unhappy and disappointed with his son who turned out to be a failure. Zarina Wahab made her presence felt in a small role. Purnendu Bhattacharya and Yamini Das are good in the role of the female lead's parents. Others performed according to their roles.
Sharan Sharma who earlier directed Janhvi's Gunjan Saxena directed this film. However he failed to make an impression as he failed to come with strong character arcs for various roles. None of the scenes connected chords with the people emotionally and the cricket matches are bereft of any thrills. Story is just average and screenplay and direction left a lot to be desired.
Cinematography of Anay Goswamy used the dark tone and this looked forced to evoke strong emotions which he failed completely. The songs turned out to be speedbrakers though situational and the BGM tuned by John Stewart Eduri is just ok. Editing of Nitin Baid could have been far better as there are many drags that slowed the pace of the film. Production values are ok.
Verdict:
Mr and Mrs Mahi, starring Rajkummar Rao and Janhvi Kapoor, turned out to be a rather ordinary romantic sports drama. Director Sharan Sharma struggled to deliver impactful scenes and a compelling storyline. A bit of fine-tuning in the script could have significantly improved the final result.
