Tamil Nadu Exhibitors Association Seeks Ticket Price Increase

The Tamil Nadu Exhibitors Association asked the state government to increase ticket prices because low rates are hurting exhibitors. This is how the situation is affecting them.

Producers set budgets and sell films at prices. Exhibitors buy films at different prices based on factors like location, demand, and involvement of famous actors and directors.

Exhibitors should make more money than the producer’s price. Exhibitors make deals with theaters and share profits based on the agreement terms. The problem is that ticket prices in Tamil Nadu are very low.

In cities like Chennai, ticket prices can be as low as 65 Rupees, even in multiplexes. Exhibitors have a hard time making enough money.

Exhibitors have asked the government to change ticket prices. Multiplex ticket prices: AC – 250 Rupees, non-AC – 150 Rupees. The recommended rates for corporations, municipalities, and Panchayats are 200 Rupees for AC showings and 120 Rupees for non-AC showings. Recliner seats cost 350 Rupees, EPIQ screens cost 400 Rupees, and IMAX screens cost 450 Rupees.

Producer Suresh Kamakshi opposes the Theatre Owners Association’s request. He tweeted, “People are choosing home theaters because movie prices are too high.” Will people still watch movies if ticket prices go up? What will happen to indie movies? The government and theater owners should prioritize moviegoers’ interests and avoid this move.

The debate continues between exhibitors wanting higher rates and those worried about the impact on movie lovers and smaller films’ survival.
