The collapse of a bridge near the Andheri railway station in Mumai has shocked one and all. Five people were injured and local train services were suspended after the incident. The bridge was constructed in 1971 and a safety procedure last November stated that nothing was abnormal.
But here’s more: motorman Chandrasekhar has averted a major accident by stopping the train just a few metres ahead of the place where a part of the bridge was collapsed. Sawant was steering the Churchgate bound suburban train from Borivli.
“I immediately applied emergency brakes and the train stopped a few metres from the spot where the bridge collapsed,” he said. In addition to this, Railways minister Piyush Goyal promised Sawant a Rs.5 lakh reward for his ‘quick thinking and timely action’.
