Sasikala, undergoing 4-year long rigorous imprisonment at the Parappana Agarhara Prison complex in Bangalore, faces more trouble as it has been confirmed by an inquiry committee that she received ‘concessions’ in food, accommodation, etc. by bribing top prison officials heavily.
Sasikala, her sister-in-law Ilavarasi and Sudhakaran have been lodged in prison from February this year. Former Prisons DIG Roopa revealed that Sasikala used to leave the prison for regular shopping visits in ‘civil dress’ and that she had separate kitchen and other facilities which accrued to her after bribing prison officials. DGP Sathya Narayana Rao was accused of having taken Rs.2 crores as bribe for the ‘concessions’.
Govt. of Karnataka set up a high-powered committee headed by retired IPS official Vinay Kumar to inquire the allegations. The team visited the prison and interrogated Roopa and Sathya Narayana Rao and filed its report recently with State Home Minister Ramalinga Reddy who would consult the chief-minister on the further course of action to be taken based on the committee’s findings.
Insiders say that the committee has found the prison authorities ‘erring in their duties’ by allowing the ‘accused’ get all kinds of concessions. Sasikala, who is already down and out by the income-tax department’s raids at her many premises/establishments, is said to have been disappointed by the committee’s findings.
