Following the stupendous success of Prithviraj's debut directorial ‘Lucifer’, that had Mohanlal in the lead role, the second part of the movie was announced. Titled ‘Empuraan’, the film was announced last year.

During the recently held Vanitha Film Awards 2020 ceremony, Mohanlal was awarded the best actor award for his performance in Lucifer. Dedicating the award to his team members, Mohanlal opened up about the movie's sequel 'Empuraan'. Mohanlal revealed that the pre-production works of the movie will begin by the end of 2020. If all goes well, the movie will go on floors by mid-2021.

Like the prequel, 'Empuraan' will also be scripted by Murali Gopi and directed by Prithviraj. ‘Empuraan’ will have Mohanlal returning as Khureshi Ab’raam aka Stephen Nedumbally. Prithviraj, apart from directing the film, will be reprising his role as Zayed Masood. Actors Indrajith, Manju Warrier and Tovino Thomas are also expected to be retained
