MB University, founded by veteran actor and educationist Mohan Babu in Tirupati, has found itself embroiled in a significant controversy. Allegations have been raised against the institution regarding financial extortion, student mistreatment, and misuse of power. Manchu Manoj, Mohan Babu’s son and actor, responded strongly to these claims, expressing his concern and support for affected students.
Manchu Manoj’s Response
Reacting to the accusations, Manoj took to social media to defend his father and the institution. In his post, he acknowledged the concerns being raised about MB University and reassured the public that his father, Dr. Mohan Babu, has always prioritized student welfare and the Rayalaseema community. Whistleblower Allegations:
The controversy began when a whistleblower accused MB University of extorting students and their parents by imposing unjust fees. The whistleblower also made claims about Mohan Babu and Manchu Vishnu behaving like “goondas” and allegedly using student funds to influence the MAA (Movie Artistes Association) elections, which saw Vishnu elected as president. In their post, the whistleblower appealed to students to come forward with their experiences and vowed to expose the situation to the media.
Student Union Protests and Parents’ Concerns:
The allegations sparked outrage among student union leaders and parents. Protests were held at MB University, with student leaders claiming that the university is engaging in large-scale extortion, particularly from day scholars, by charging unjustified hostel and mess fees. The situation escalated when some students reported being attacked by bouncers after questioning these practices.
Parents have also expressed frustration over the university's conduct, accusing it of charging exorbitant fees despite government fee reimbursement programs. They have filed complaints with the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), and some allege that the institution forces students to eat at the canteen while charging excessive amounts for food.
Mohan Babu’s Reputation and University's History:
MB University, officially established less than two years ago, evolved from the Srividyanikethan schools and colleges that Mohan Babu had previously managed. While the university was launched with high expectations and Mohan Babu’s promise of providing quality education, it has since been surrounded by controversy. A recurring grievance among students is the collection of funds for events like the annual "Mohan Mantra" program, which is organized on Mohan Babu’s birthday, further fueling the backlash against the institution.
As the controversy grows, both the institution and its leadership are under scrutiny, with student unions and concerned parents demanding transparency and accountability from MB University.
