Modi sarkar to target social media giants fact-checkers?

The tussle between the Centre and social media giants like Twitter is hitting new levels by the day. The other day, the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology firmly told Twitter not to think too highly of its commitment to freedom of speech. It asked the micro-blogging social media giant to comply with Indian laws.

Afresh, the government has hinted that agenda-driven fact-checkers associated with Facebook, among others, are going to be sought accountability. "Social media companies already have appointed fact-checkers. Who are these fact-checkers and how are they appointed? There are some fact-checkers whose main agenda is to drive hatred against Modi," Union Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad tweeted.

It's not clear how exactly the fact-checkers will be made to submit to checks and balances. Appearing on another channel, the IT Minister said that there can be no compromise on India’s digital sovereignty.

Going by all this, the Centre seems to be intent on ending tech tyranny in a number of far-reaching ways.

The Minister made it clear that the government wants the social media intermediaries to appoint grievance redressal officer where users can share their grievances in order to empower social media users.
