Modi sarkar issues final notice to Twitter

It's known that Twitter is yet to comply with the new intermediary rules meant for social media companies. On Saturday, the Modi government issued what it called the last notice to the micro-blogging site. It asked Twitter to comply with the Rules immediately. It warned that the company will face consequences if it doesn't do so.

"Twitter Inc. is hereby given one last notice to immediately comply with the Rules, failing which the exemption from liability available under Section 79 of the IT Act, 2000 shall stand withdrawn and Twitter shall be liable for consequences as per the IT Act and other penal laws of India," the notice, which has been widely shared on social media, read.

A Chief Compliance Officer, a Resident Grievance Officer and a Nodal Contact Person are to be appointed by Twitter. The officers have to be based in India.

"The officer address of Twitter, as mentioned by you is that of a law firm in India. This is not as per the rules," the notice reads.

The notice says that Twitter's refusal to comply with the new IT rules demonstrates its lack of commitment and efforts towards providing a safe experience for the people of India. The notice adds that Twitter has to provide a transparent grievance redressal mechanism to Indian users.
