Modi makes a surprise visit to Ladakh amid Indo-China tensions

Narendra Modi on Friday made a surprise visit to Ladakh at a time when the border standoff between India and China is an unresolved issue.  Reports say that the Prime Minister is at one of the forward locations in Nimu.

He is getting a briefing of the ground situation.  The PM is going to interact with Army, Air Force and ITBP personnel.  This is his first visit to Ladakh since China standoff, reported Manu Pubby of Economic Times.

Commentators are welcoming Modi's visit.  Senior journalist Rajat Sharma tweeted, Modi reached forward locations to interact with Army, Air Force and ITBP. Brave PM’s presence at 11,000 feet in tough terrain surrounded by Zanskar range, will certainly uplift the morale of our soldiers. Modi never stops surprising.

Strategic affairs commentator Abhijit Iyer-Mitra noted the contrast between Chinese Premier Xi Jinping and Modi. Spare a thought for Chinese troops? Their president considers it below his dignity to even acknowledge his fallen troops leave alone visit them. Love or hate Modi, his visit to Ladakh’s frontlines is a huge morale booster, he wrote.
