Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi has accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi of having ‘felled’ Indian economy with the twin bombs of demonetization and GST.
It may be recalled that on 08th November last year, Prime Minister Narendra Modi took the entire nation by surprise by announcing that the existing Rs.1000 and Rs.500 currency notes would not be tenderable and should be exchanged for new notes by 31st March, 2017. People and traders were put to untold hardships in the first couple of months of demonetization as long, serpentine queues were witnessed outside Banks/ATMs to exchange/withdraw currency notes.
Taking on the BJP-led Centre which has decided to observe Nov.08 ‘Anti-black money Day’, the Congress party has announced that it would observe the day as a ‘Black Day’ in the history of the country’s economy. A consultation meeting of Congress leaders to plan for protests on that day was held in New Delhi yesterday. In view of party president Sonia Gandhi’s ill-health, Rahul Gandhi headed the meeting.
“Modi has felled the country’s economy with the twin bombs of demonetization and GST. Though the country survived the bomb of demonetization, it couldn’t survive the bomb of GST, which is supposed to have been a uniform tax regime. I can’t understand what made the Centre announce that Nov.08 would be celebrated as ‘anti-black money day’. Modi failed to read people’s difficulties and destroyed the economy,” Rahul thundered at the meeting.
