After almost two decades of wearing lightweight helmets, the Indian Army got its first batch of modern bulletproof ones.

According to Economic Times, the contract worth Rs. 180 crore to supply 1.6 lakh helmets was awarded to Madurai Kamaraj University (MKU) Limited, Kanpur, which delivered the first batch this month. MKU is a protection and surveillance equipment supplier to the UN and the NATO.

The helmets meet international standards and give all-round protection to the head. MKU hopes to deliver 7 lakh helmets to the Army and a total of 10 lakh helmets to different Indian armed forces, according to Managing Director Neeraj Gupta.
