Mobile phones banned for voters

Ahead of the elections in Telangana and Rajasthan on Friday, the Election Commission has issued orders that voters and polling personnel should not use mobile phones inside polling stations.  Orders to this effect have been issued.

It may be mentioned that this practice has been in vogue since the 2014 Lok Sabha elections.  SMSes by polling staff for sending reports to the election authorities is the only practice allowed.

In an old order, this is what the EC had said: “Presiding Officer or your first polling officer can use a mobile phone only for sending reports through SMS to the EC.”
