Mirza Juuliet Review
Expectations
Legendary folk tales have always inspired lovers all over the globe. That's the reason we keep witnessing minimum one such film in a year. Last year we had 'Mirzya', which was inspired from Mirza - Sahiban love story. The movie failed to do wonders and for all the fans of Mirza - Sahiban, we have one more film based on them in the form of 'Mirza Juuliet'.
This movie is a modern day adaptation of the classic love tale with bold content attached to it. The trailers look promising, but lack of big stars makes the movie look dull and can work only because of the good mouth publicity.
Story
'Mirza Juuliet', is a story of Mirza (Darshan Kumar), who returns back to his uncle's house after finishing his punishments for the crime he had committed as a child. He meets his childhood friend Jullie Shukla (Piaa Bajpai) and starts developing a strong bond with her. Jullie on the other end is engaged to Rajan Pandey (Chandan Roy Sanyal), who is a sex maniac and son of a top politician Pandey PandeyJi (Swanand Kirkire). Mirza and Jullie's bonding keep growing leading to something unexpected.
The 'Glitz' Factor
The second half is gripping and has something unique attached to it. These are some interesting scenes related to Piaa and Darshan along with the finale fight.
Director Rajesh Ram Singh comes up with an unusual take on Mirza-Sahiban but has his story structured quite similar to 'Mirzya'. Priyanshu Chatterjee and Swanand Kirkire are fine in their parts.
The screenplay despite of being predicted and forced was gripping. The movie never bores you despite of its stale content. The cinematography is of top notch and keeps the movie look stylish.
The 'Non-Glitz' Factor
The treatment is almost similar to recently released film 'Mirzya', except for its backdrop and forced track of sex in the movie. The first half takesa lot of time to settle down and it's only after the second half the movie gains some momentum. The writers have forced the sex track in the movie after which all we are forced to see is a series of verbose dialogues with moral messages.
The whole pervert track of Chandan Roy Sanyal is bad followed by phone sex, casual sex and pre-marital rape. These tracks try to make the movie different from its usual drama, but fails to go with the flow of the film. All these scenes looked forced and unwanted. It looks like the writers wanted to titillate the audience by these tracks, which eventually ruins the flow of the film.
Right from wife beating, forced sex, rape and honor killing, the writers have tried to justify all these inhumane acts through its protagonists. The finale is illogical as its set in Nepal, where our lead characters roam around with guns and ammunition just like they are strolling in their backyard. The music has to be a key element in such movies.
Sadly, except for 'Tukda Tukda' there is not even a single song which can be termed as memorable. The unusual factor should have been properly used in the film and not just to titillate the audience. The movie fails to connect on the love factor and glorifies crime against women.
Darshan Kumar looks good, but seemed lost in the film. Piaa Bajpai is loud and highly irritating at times. Chandan Roy Sanyal hams to the fullest.
Final 'Glitz'
'Mirza Juuliet' is a love story without love. The narrative is interesting and has some moments which gets highly ruined due to bad portrayal of women followed by a predictable screenplay and weak modernization of the epic love sage.
