Manipur's weight-lifting athlete Saikohm Mirabai Chanu has won the gold medal at the world weight-lifting championship tournament being held at California in U.S.
With the gold medal, Chanu becomes the first Indian to win the medal at a world championship meet in two decades. Chanu achieved the commendable feat of winning the gold after putting behind her forgettable performance at Rio Olympics when she flattered to deceive.
The final of the 48-kg category weight-lifting was held on Wednesday when Mirabai Chanu lifted an impressive 85 kg in snatch and 109 kg in clean and jerk category, thus lifting a record 194 kg. The feat, a new national record as well, resulted in Chanu bagging the gold medal.
Former weight-lifter and Olympic bronze medallist Karnam Malleswari had won gold at this championship on two consecutive occasion way back in 1994 and 1995. Chanu has won the gold after 22 long years. Thailand and Columbian weight-lifters won the silver and bronze medals after Chanu won the gold medal.
President Ram Nath Kovind and Prime Minister Narendra Modi sent separate congratulatory messages to Chanu on her rare achievement.
