Former US President Donald Trump achieved a significant victory on Wednesday in his battle against challenges to his eligibility for a potential run for the White House in 2024. Michigan's Supreme Court rejected an attempt to bar him from the state's 2024 presidential primary ballot, particularly due to his involvement in the January 6, 2021, US Capitol riot.

The Court declined to hear an appeal aiming to disqualify Trump from the February 27 Republican primary. The appeal was based on a provision in the US Constitution preventing individuals from holding office if they engaged in "insurrection or rebellion" post-taking the US oath. The justices released a brief order stating their refusal to review the presented questions.

Michigan's Court highlighted that state law doesn't grant election officials the authority to regulate the eligibility of presidential primary candidates. They deemed the case as a political question that shouldn't be determined by the judiciary.

The Court of Appeals upheld this decision, emphasizing that Trump's disqualification was irrelevant to his placement on the primary ballot.

Reacting to the decision, Trump, via his Truth Social platform, praised the Michigan Supreme Court's denial, denouncing it as a "desperate Democrat attempt" to exclude him from the ballot.

This contrasted with the recent ruling by Colorado's Supreme Court, which removed Trump from its primary ballot due to his involvement in the Capitol riot. The decision is pending an appeal. Trump intends to challenge the Colorado ruling in the US Supreme Court.

Notably, Trump faces indictments in federal and Georgia cases linked to the 2020 election but hasn't been charged with insurrection concerning the January 6 Capitol riot. A US Supreme Court ruling could potentially settle Trump's nationwide eligibility for the 2024 presidential race.
