A mentally challenged woman gave birth without medical assistance in a jail cell in Broward County, Florida seven hours after she had requested medical assistance as informed by her lawyers who had mentioned this in their letter to the sheriff.
Public defenders Howard Finkelstein and Gordon Weekes Jr. said that this was an inhumane treatment, and said that the jail and medical officials available knew that Tammy Jackson was expecting, when she had said on April 10 of having contractions and asked for medical help. The failed to take Jackson to a hospital complained the lawyers to Sheriff Gregory Tony.
Reportedly the doctor had said that he will check Jackson when he comes to the jail. Jackson gave birth to her daughter Miranda Latrice Nixon and even after an hour and 38 minutes Jackson was still in the jail cell bleeding, and no help was offered to her. Jackson was holding her newborn baby in her arms, after delivering her with zero medical assistance. The Sheriff's office has launched an investigation into the issue.
