'Mental Madhilo' will haunt the audience: Raj Kandukuri [Interview]
- IndiaGlitz, [Thursday,November 23 2017]
Producer Raj Kandukuri, who attained fame with 'Pelli Choopulu', says in this interview that 'Mental Madhilo' is a mature and clean entertainer. He talks about the film's premise, why Sri Vishnu was chosen, why the title, so on and so forth. The film releases on Nov 24.
How did this film happen in the first place?
Director Vivek Athreya had come to me with a story titled 'Kavyam'. I found it too poetic and thought that it might not work commercially. In a week's time, he came to me with the story of 'Mental Madhilo'.
I ended up liking the script after 2.5 hours of narration. The male lead's characterization is quite beautiful. He is confused. It might be of no consequence if one is confused over trivial things. Our film talks about how one should conduct themselves with a balance of mind while taking major decisions.
What can we expect from the movie?
The first half is a breezy love story. The second half unfolds in the backdrop of a conflicted situation.
Shivaji Raja garu's character is a major attraction in our film. He feels that this film is going to be a turning point in his career.
What about Sri Vishnu?
Since he is a shy person by nature, his acting is quite authentic. Everybody will love him in 'MM'.
Even as the story was being narrated, I had thought of Vishnu for the male lead's role. Vivek too agreed to it. I called up Vishnu and asked him to listen to the script and do it only if he likes it.
What makes 'MM' so special?
All of us can relate to the film at some level or the other. After 'Pelli Choopulu', many expected me to make bigger films. Although I would have loved to do it, I am rather happy introducing newcomers.
'MM' has the quality of haunting the audience long after they walk out of the theatre. After this film, my responsibility is going to go up. People will say that when Raj Kandukuri makes a movie, he does it right.
What is the title justification?
I like the works of Mani Ratnam garu and K Balachander garu. I like the term 'Mental Madhilo'. Moreover, the title explains the hero's characterization.
How has your journey with D Suresh Babu been like?
After the film was completed, Suresh Babu garu evinced interest in our project. It makes us quite happy.
What makes you try out short-filmmakers especially?
Having watched their work already, I would have a grasp of their tastes and talent. With them, I can work on the pre-production at an elaborate level. This also helps me save time on shooting part. Like in the case of 'Pelli Choopulu', we held workshops for this movie as well.
What is your next film?
I am planning to do a movie with another short-filmmaker. The details of its cast and crew will be revealed soon.
