Several commentators have alleged that misogyny may be at play in the ongoing drugs probe. From Rhea Chakraborty to Jaya Saha and now Deepika Padukone, Rakul Preet Singh, Shraddha Kapoor and Sara Ali Khan, most of the high-profile names we are hearing in the drugs case are of women.
Journalist Marya Shakil, reacting in the increasing number of women being investigated, tweeted, "Besides the female actors, Simone Khambatta (a designer) and female managers Karishma Prakash and Jaya Saha have been summoned. Is it possible that the investigation is zeroing in only on women? In this smoke and mirror conflict, are women just proxies?"
But is the charge of women being victimized true? Not at all, feel critics. "Just Googled and found out that almost a dozen men have been either arrested or asked to join investigation in the drugs case. Dipesh Sawant, Anuj, Showik, Samuel Miranda, Siddharth Pithani, Samee Ahmed, Sandip Singh and others are the names," says a social media user named Shivam.
It may be noted that Rhea Chakraborty appeared for questioning once wearing a tee-shirt with the words 'Smash Patriarchy' written on it. It's true that women are unfortunately getting wide attention from the media, sections of which are resorting to media trials. But it's not fair to say that only women have been arrested or questioned in the drugs probe.
