Meghan Markle has made her debut at the Invictus Games, receiving a warm welcome from both fans and teams. The event kicked off with Prince Harry's opening speech, where he made it clear that Markle was supporting a particular team in the 6th edition of the games. The Duchess joined her husband on September 13, and soon, Team Nigeria bestowed upon her a charming nickname.
The couple's first match was a wheelchair basketball game between Ukraine and Australia. They also participated in a children's event and concluded their day by meeting the Nigerian team, who were participating in the event for the first time.
In his opening speech, Prince Harry humorously remarked, Now, I'm not saying we play favorites in our home, but since my wife discovered she's of Nigerian descent, it's likely to get a little bit more competitive this year. This jest referred to Markle's revelation that she is 43% Nigerian, which she shared on her Archetypes podcast last year.
During their interaction with Team Nigeria, the couple was presented with a plaque by the Nigerian Chief of Defense. Additionally, they affectionately called the 42-year-old Duchess Amira Ngozi Lolo. Amira is derived from the name of a warrior princess in an old tale, Ngozi means blessed, and Lolo signifies Royal Wife.
Prince Harry initiated the Invictus Games in 2014, drawing inspiration from his own military service in the British Army and his desire to support veterans. Meghan Markle, on the other hand, attributed her late arrival at the tournament to ensuring their little ones were settled at home.
