In the late 1990s, Mohammad Azharuddin was at the centre of a match-fixing controversy that rocked the world of cricket. It was a hot topic in the country, sparking cover stories and a thousand opinion articles. The scandal broke the hearts of cricket lovers, who were sorry that they may have been deceived by their beloved cricketers.
The controversy is now back, with office-bearers of the Telangana Cricket Association saying that they will soon be meeting with Union Home Minister Amit Shah with a request to re-open the CBI probe into the match-fixing issue involving Azhar.
On Monday, the TCA President and Secretary have been quoted as saying by Deccan Chronicle that Azhar not following the guidelines set by the Supreme Court while being the President of the Hyderabad Cricket Association (HCA) will also be brought into the limelight. They alleged that the audit of accounts, etc. saw some flouting of norms during Azhar's stewardship.
They also explicitly mentioned a 1999 match between India and Pakistan that allegedly had Azhar doing what bookies wanted him to.
