Disney’s latest Marvel Cinematic Universe entry, “The Marvels,” has once again claimed the top spot at the box office, raking in $47 million during its North American opening weekend, as reported by measurement firm Comscore. Despite its success, it falls short when compared to its MCU predecessors, struggling to surpass the opening box-office figures of 2008’s “The Incredible Hulk,” which secured $55.4 million.
Surprisingly, “The Marvels” faced tough competition from Universal Pictures’ “Five Nights at Freddy’s,” a two-time box-office champion, which managed to scare up $9 million in the United States and Canada during its third weekend. The horror film’s cumulative domestic earnings now stand at $127.2 million.
Contrary to early expectations, “The Marvels” didn’t meet the initial box office projections, which anticipated a more robust performance between $60 million to $65 million domestically. While the film is undeniably a box-office success, it falls short of surpassing the heights achieved by its MCU predecessors in terms of opening weekend numbers.
