The government of Mauritius has imposed an environmental emergency on Saturday. This drastic decision comes in the wake of oil spilling from a grounded cargo ship into the island nation's protected waters.

Because the seas are "rough", the non-stop fuel leakage from MV Wakashio hasn't been contained. "The spillover is polluting pristine waters," reports said.

Prime Minister Pravind Jugnauth shared a news report which declared that Mauritius faces an environmental crisis after a Japanese-owned ship began spilling oil in its blue lagoons this week.

Manish Kumar said that Mauritius is now facing an environmental disaster. "The island nation declares a state of environmental emergency after a Japan-owned ship began spilling tons of fuel, nearly 4,000 tons of fuel oil and 200 tons of diesel on board," he tweeted.

Mauritius has sought France's help in containing the damage.
