A huge movement of migrants from one of the largest slums of Asia – Mumbai’s Dharavi towards native places such as Tirunelveli is constantly happening amidst the Coronavirus pandemic and the nationwide mandatory lockdown imposition.
In one such instance, 10,000 people from Tirunelveli district who had settled in Dharavi before few decades are in huge panic due to the threat of infection spread as there are more than seven lakh residents in Dharavi with an area of just around 2.10 sq km.
Each house measures 100 to 200 sq ft, which makes it almost impossible to maintain social distancing which is being advised and mandated as the best possible way to avoid infection spread. Now without any transport facilities, people from the slums are taking their own vehicles to travel to their native towns in south. After getting informed about the mass movement from Dharavi Collector Shilpa Prabhakar Satish posted a testing unit and quarantine centre at Raja Puthukkudi located near Gangaikondan bordering Tirunelveli-Thoothukudi district for screening them.
