'Mary Kom' writes box office history

Most champions make their name but she made history-Starring Priyanka Chopra in and as Mary Kom- the film, like its namesake, had made history by raking over 30Cr at the box office. Setting a new record for female led films, Mary Kom packed several punches at the theatres over the weekend. Produced by Viacom18 Motion Pictures and Sanjay LeelaBhansali, this biopic depicts the journey of India's premier woman boxer MC Mary Kom, both in and outside the square boxing ring.

Opening at a phenomenal 8.4Cr on Monday, this solo release struck a chord with viewers as they saw Mary fight against all odds to become the acclaimed international icon she is today. Keeping the momentum going through the weekend, the film collected 9.5Cr on Saturday followed by a whopping 12.5Cr on Sunday. With a release in about 1600 screens nationally, Monday saw an additional collection of 4.5Cr. The film continues to draw record crowds and is setting new benchmarks for the Sheroes in Bollywood.

Delighted by the triumph at the Box Office, Ajit Andhare - COO, Viacom18 Motion Pictures said, "We have always believed in the power of strong content. Mary Kom's knock out performance at the box office assures us that we are on the right path. The movie has earned the distinction of breaking-even in record time and is set to occupy a pride of place in Viacom18 Motion Pictures kitty alongside our other iconic films - Kahani, Special 26, Oh my God, Gangs of Wasseypur, BhaagMilkha, Madras Café and Queen.

Mary Kom was given a tax free status in the states of Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan and Assam. The film also premiered on the Opening Night of the prestigious Toronto International Film Festival, 2014 (TIFF) on the eve of its worldwide release.
