Five-time Grand Slam champion and former world number one Maria Sharapova on Tuesday announced on her Instagram page that she is pregnant with her first child on the occasion of her 35th birthday.
Sharing a picture of herself holding her baby bump, Sharapova wrote, “Precious beginnings!!! Eating birthday cake for two has always been my specialty.” The Tennis champ, who retired from the game in February 2020, got engaged later that year to British businessman Alexander Gilkes, who is the founder of an online auction house, Paddle8, and is also apparently a close friend of Prince Harry, Prince William and Kate Middleton.
Maria Sharapova won her first Grand Slam as a 17-year-old in 2004 when she defeated two-time defending champion Serena Williams at the Wimbledon final. She followed it up with the US Open title in 2006, the Australian Open title in 2008 and the French Open title in 2012. She also won the silver medal at the London Olympics the same year.
