Accolades are coming in for actress Manisha Koirala for her part in the show "Heeramandi." Her depiction of a courtesan has won admiration from many despite conflicting assessments and accurate criticism. Manisha recently posted on Instagram some of her experiences shooting the most difficult sequence in the series.
Manisha went into great detail about the physically and emotionally taxing fountain scene, which took about 12 hours to shoot. She talked of her great sense of achievement and tenacity in spite of her weariness and immersion in filthy water.
Images from the scene accompanied Manisha's message to her followers, who emphasized that chances may come up at any time and that they might not be expected.
In "Heeramandi," Sanjay Leela Bhansali's epic tale set in the red-light district of Heera Mandi in pre-partition India, Manisha plays the courtesan Mallikajaan. The show explores the life of Nawabs and courtesans amid the British Raj era Indian freedom movement. It illustrates the fight in the 1920s–40s against colonial powers.
The series stars Manisha in addition to an ensemble cast that includes Richa Chadha, Aditi Rao Hydari, and Sonakshi Sinha. "Heeramandi" is now streaming on Netflix.
