The year commenced with unprecedented success for Malayalam films in Tamil Nadu theaters. Esteemed filmmaker Mani Ratnam, known for his support of innovative ideas, unveiled the trailer for the Malayalam film 'Paradise' yesterday.
Directed and written by internationally acclaimed filmmaker Prasanna Vithanage, the film has captured attention for its exploration of Sri Lanka amidst economic turmoil, intricate relationships, and moral dilemmas in challenging times.
'Paradise' boasts an ensemble cast including Darshana Rajendran of the Malayalam hit 'Jaya Jaya Jaya Jaya He' fame, alongside Roshan Mathew, Shyam Fernando, and Mahendra Perera. Rajendran has previously showcased her talent in films like 'Kavan' and 'Irumbuthirai'.
The crew includes Anushka Senanayake as co-writer, Rajeev Ravi as cinematographer, Sreekar Prasad as editor, Tapas Nayak as sound designer, and K as the music director. Produced by Newton Cinema and presented by Mani Ratnam’s Madras Talkies, 'Paradise' was entirely filmed in Sri Lanka, marking the debut collaboration between Madras Talkies and the Malayalam film industry.
Accolades have poured in for 'Paradise', with the film being the first South Indian film to win the prestigious Kim Jiseok Award for Best Asian Film at the Busan International Film Festival and the Prix Du Jury Lyceen 2024 award at France's Vesoul International Film Festival. The film delves into the narrative of Sri Lanka's recent economic crisis.
'Paradise' is scheduled for worldwide theatrical release in April 2024.
