Mani Ratnam started shooting his dream project 'Ponniyin Selvan' in the last quarter of 2019 and completed close to forty percent in forest locations in Thailand. The multi star cast includes Vikram, Karthi, Jayam Ravi, Aishwarya Rai Bachan and Trisha. The Indian schedule of the film however was disrupted due to the coronavirus pandemic and lockdown. Since the project involves a huge star cast and hundreds of extras and crew members the resumption is likely to be delayed for a minimum of six months or so.
We already reported that Mani Ratnam planned to move on to another project in the gap and sources suggested it could be the sequel to his 1992 blockbuster hit 'Roja' that had Arvind Swamy and Madhubala in the lead. Other sources have since reported that it may also be a totally different script
Now the news has emerged that Mani Ratnam has planned to enter the OTT space and will be producing a web series that will consist of nine short stories and based on the navarasas in Indian mythology. It is said that the ace director will serve as the producer and creative director while the nine stories will have nine different directors.
Amazon Prime Video is said to be the platform that will stream this Mani Ratnam mega venture and the highlight is that the money collected through the show will go towards helping the workers from the film industry who have lost their livelihood due to the lockdown. More details and official confirmation awaited on this one.
