Manchu Mohan Babu needs no introduction to Telugu audiences. He is the synonym for discipline and versatility. He is celebrating 50 years in the film industry and examining the marvelous work he has done in these five decades.
Mohan Babu is a versatile actor. He began his career playing villain roles, and later, he transitioned into mainstream hero characters. From 1975 to 1990, Mohan Babu redefined the antagonist’s role in Indian cinema, becoming one of the most sought-after villains in the country. Swargam Narakam's movie marked his rise, and after the film's success, there is no looking back for him.
In the 1990s, Mohan Babu transitioned to leading roles and became closer to all classes of audiences, especially the mass audiences. Blockbusters like Alludugaru, Assembly Rowdy, and Pedarayudu are some examples that cemented his position in the industry.
Not just that, many of his Telugu movies were later remade in Hindi and Tamil, where they became massive blockbusters, further expanding his legacy across Indian cinema at the pan-India level.
The success of Pedarayudu was celebrated with an iconic 200-day function in Tirupati. This historic event, unprecedented in Indian cinema, and the event drew nearly 10 lakh people. Later, Mohan Babu’s influence transcended cinema and extended into the political sphere.
In 1993, he produced the film Major Chandrakanth, starring N.T. Rama Rao played a pivotal role in rallying support for NTR’s return as Chief Minister. An unprecedented number of fans attended the film’s 100-day celebration in Tirupati. Later, in the 2000s, he slowly started taking up character artist roles, but even today, he is very picky about them.
Beyond cinema, Mohan Babu’s contributions to education are equally noteworthy. In 1992, he established the SREE Vidyaniketan Educational Trust, offering quality and affordable education to thousands of students. The trust has provided 25% free education for over three decades, empowering underprivileged students. The establishment of Mohan Babu University in 2022 reflects his unwavering commitment to creating opportunities for future generations.
Mohan Babu was awarded the Padma Shri in 2007 and the Filmfare Lifetime Achievement Award in 2016. All three of his children are into movies now. Lakshmi Prasanna, Vishnuvardhan Babu, and Manoj Kumar have established careers in cinema.
On the occasion of Mohan Babu's milestone, Vishnu has planned monthly events starting in December 2024, leading to a grand celebration in November 2025. Each event will be announced on the 1st of every month.
On the cinema front, Mohan Babu is currently working on the highly anticipated film Kannappa, in which he portrays Mahadeva Shastri.
