An undertrial, who was accused of several theft cases, hurled his slippers at a magistrate in the Bhiwandi court in Maharashtra’s Thane after being convicted and sentenced to six months in prison on Wednesday.
After judicial magistrate HJ Pathan pronounced his judgement, the accused Ashraf Ansari, threw his slippers at the judge in a fit of rage, who managed to escape the attack by ducking the footwear. Ansari has reportedly spent 14 months behind bars already in other cases.
Following the incident, the accused was arrested and booked by the police under IPC sections 353 (assault or criminal force to deter public servant from discharge of his duty) and 228 (intentional insult or interruption to public servant sitting in a judicial proceeding). The incident also sparked fury among lawyers, who went on a strike, demanding proper security for judges and advocates.
