14 year old Norazilla and 11 year old Ayu were the best of friends for many years untill the former found to her shock that her father Che Abdul Karim had married little Ayu as his third wife. The incident happened in Northern Malaysia and though the world is outraged Abdul Karin 41 has stated that he loves his third wife and will not touch her till she turns 16. Ayu on her her part has also affirmed that she loves her husband in spite of him having two other wifes and six children some of whom are older than her.

Many social activists in Malaysia have criticized the child marriages which is a common thing in the majority Malay Muslim community. It is said that a man can get approval from a Shariah and can marry even an infant. The most shocking is the statement of Mohamad Amar Nik Abdullah, Kelantan’s deputy chief minister and vice president of the Malaysian Islamic Party, who stressed that child marriage is legal in Islam and said that the existence of homosexuals and single parents in Malaysia “should be a concern for our government and society.”
