Makeup Man

After some movies with not so interesting backdrops, Jayaram is finally in a movie that may help him to deliver a hit. His new movie with director Shafi, 'Makeup Man' is indeed a good commercial fare that may work well with lovers of comedies. Set in the backdrop of film making, the movie also takes a satirical look into the back stories of movie prodcution.

`Makeup Man' has director Shafi joins his hit scriptwriters, Sachi-Sethu of `Chocolate' to tell a story about a newly wed husband forced to pretend as a makeup man of his star wife. The movie has Jayaram as Balu, a Master in Business Administration, who is amidst  losses  after floating an event management company. He is such deeper debt  that he has to enter his own house after dark like a housebreaker to avoid bumping into his creditors. It is at this dismal situation that he is forced to take care of Soorya (Sheela), who is madly in love with him, and flees from home before her marriage. Balu's only company in the city is a film production manager Kichu Manjaly (Suraj Venjarammoodu), who arranges their stay in the hotel room allotted for a new heroine of the movie. Confusions galore follows and Soorya is forced to act as the new face and soon she is selected as the heroine of the new film 'Sindrella' by director Siddharth, which is under production.. The director changes her name to 'Anamika' and in order to stay close with her, Balu takes the role of her personal makeup man. After that the couple manages to escape one difficult situation after other, until things take a severe spin just before the intermission

The movie has plenty of well made sequences, laughter and emotions, frivolous and reality, but is a little too lengthy at 150 minutes. The first half of the movie marches on with proper direction. Things are smooth sailing till the emotional angle comes up in the latter half which lacks focus. The narrative dips in those 30 odd minutes and the viewers are forced even to let loose the basic plot they are on. The presence of Kunchacko Boban and Prithviraj in cameos even doesn't make much of an impact to the story.

Jayaram appears just ok for the role, and don't have much more to offer than his regular emoting styles. But Sheela does her role of the aspiring cine actor with enthusiastic glamour looks combined with that confidence. Suraj Venjarammoodu is better than his recent outings and manages to make you laugh many a times. Siddique and Janardhanan looks good as a film-director and his producer Paul. Salim Kumar, Jagathy Sreekumar and Jagadeesh' just manages to be in passable roles.

The visuals by Azhagappan are fine. But the couple of songs by Vidyasagar are average. And the BG scores by Alex Paul is repetitive and over the board at times.

All in all, `Makeup Man' will not be a loser, as in comedy films Mollywood audience has made it a habit not to look for much logic. With a tremendous  first half , and an average second half , the movie may succeed to bring back the capital  spend on it.
