If Mahesh Babu's character in 'SPYder' is not out of the blue (since we always knew more about Shiva from the film's Trailer and pre-release revelations), the characters played by SJ Suryah and Rakul Preet Singh are a surprise package for sure.

Of the two characters, Rakul's character has generated a mixed response. The conservative sections have it that the female lead of a mainstream film like 'SPYder' pining for a blind date (having watched porn for 4 hours, no less) is unacceptable.

On the other hand, there are those who are of the view that Rakul's Charlie is a 'hatke' lady. She is not regular. Charlie's charming innocence and her craving for a blind date are poles apart. AR Murugadoss has shown through this character that such girls do exist in our society. He did write a distinct character and he deserves a pat on the back for it.

What is more, Mahesh Babu's character using the phrase 'Friends With Benefits' in relation to Charlie is stunning. Among the youngsters of urban India, 'FWB' has a not-so-innocuous connotation. Once again, ARM is different here, having made a superstar say this much!
