"Guntur Kaaram", a Telugu film featuring popular stars Mahesh Babu and Trivikram Srinivas, had all the ingredients for a blockbuster - a unique combination of action, comedy, and drama, backed by a significant fan base and goodwill in North America. However, the final box office figures for the film in the region tell a different story.
Despite high expectations and initial excitement from buyers, "Guntur Kaaram" failed to live up to its potential, grossing only $2,629,127 across 583 locations in North America. This figure falls well below the film's break-even point of over $4 million, resulting in significant financial losses for the US distributor.
According to Venky Reviews, various factors contributed to the film's disappointing performance. Negative word-of-mouth from early screenings, coupled with the simultaneous release of another Telugu film "Hanuman," led to a significant drop in audience interest and foot traffic to theaters.
This outcome is particularly surprising given Mahesh Babu's immense popularity and the fact that his previous film, "Bharat Ane Nenu" (2018), had grossed over $3.4 million in North America, making it his highest-grossing film in the region.
To recoup some of the losses, the makers of "Guntur Kaaram" are reportedly planning to release the film on OTT platforms on February 9, just four weeks after its theatrical release. This decision, however, has not yet been officially confirmed.
Furthermore, there are rumors that additional sequences, such as a Kabaddi combat scene and a song focused on motherhood, which were cut before the theatrical release, will be included in the OTT version of the film. These additions are aimed at enhancing the overall experience for viewers who choose to watch the film on OTT platforms.
Despite the disappointing box office performance of "Guntur Kaaram" in North America, the film's makers remain hopeful that it will find a wider audience and appreciation through its OTT release.
