Following the Governor's recommendation, President's Rule was on Tuesday evening imposed in Maharashtra. The approval of President Ram Nath Kovind was received promptly.
Ministry of Home Affairs has said that the Governor was of the view that it has been 15 days since the conclusion of the electoral process and despite this, none of the political parties are in a position to form the government. As such, invoking Article 356 was the only option left.
Shiv Sena had earlier moved the Supreme Court against the "unreasonable" recommendation of the Governor.
Meanwhile, Congress leaders Mallikarjun Kharge, Sonia Gandhi's backroom manager Ahmed Patel and KC Venugopal arrived for a meeting with NCP supremo Sharad Pawar in the wake of the Rule.
