The High Court of Madras has ordered deletion of 1947 fake voters from the final list of voters in R.K. Nagar Assembly constituency in Chennai where by-polls are to be conducted next Thursday (21st December). It also placed on record its appreciation of DMK’s efforts in bringing this anomaly to the Court’s notice.
DMK had earlier moved the High Court stating that there were more than 45,000 fake voters in the final list. While furnishing its reply with the Court, the State Election Commission stated that 40,000 fake voters’ names were deleted from the record. DMK, however, stood its ground and filed an appeal stating that names of 5,117 voters were still to be removed from the final list.
During the second round of interrogation, the Election Commission said that names of only 1,947 fake voters remained to be deleted and added that action had been initiated to ensure that they don’t get to vote during the by-polls.
After completing its interrogation, the High Court passed its verdict yesterday directing the State Election Commission to delete the names of remaining 1,947 fake voters at once. It also lauded the DMK for the ‘sincere’ efforts it made to ensure that names of all fake voters are removed from the final list of voters.
