Today is the 63rd birthday of Kaviperarasu Vairamuthu.

Vairamuthu reigns in as the most sought after lyricist in Tamil cinema for over the past three decades since his debut in the year 1981 with the film 'Nizhalgal'. He has written over 7,500 songs having worked with many stalwarts of Tamil cinema in the past three generations. He has been the most favorite of veteran directors Balachander, Bharathiraja, Mani Ratnam and Shankar. He has penned memorable hits for Rajinikanth, Kamal Haasan, Ajith and Vijay. He has given innumerable hit songs with isaignani Ilaiyaraja, Isaipuyal A.R.Rahman, Deva, Vidyasagar, Bharadwaj, and others. He is also writing songs for the leading music directors of current generation such as Yuvan Shankar Raja, Santhosh Narayanan, Anirudh Ravichander, and Ghibran.

Vairamuthu has won seven National Awards, the highest number for any South Indian. The latest one came for his 'Entha Pakkam' song in last year's super hit film 'Dharmadurai'. He has also won the civilian honors Padmashri 'in 2003 and Padmabhushan in 2014.

Apart from being a leading lyricist, Vairamuthu is also one of the greatest poets and writers in modern Tamil literature. He has written a lot of fiction and non fiction books. His novel 'Kallikattu Ithigasam' has won the prestigious Sahitya Academy Award.
