The Lok Sabha passed the controversial ‘Triple Talaaq’ bill yesterday, amid huge opposition and walk-out by Congress and AIADMK MPs who came together for this cause despite their political differences.
The Lower House of Parliament debated hard on the Bill before it was passed late in the day after walk-out staged by Congress and AIADMK MPs. The proposed Bill, which bats for Muslim women’s rights, would be sending men, who divorce their wives by saying ‘talaaq’ thrice, to jail for a maximum of up to three years. All parties took part in the heated debate in the Lower House prior to the passing of the Bill.
While the BJP MPs welcomed the bill in toto, Opposition parties opposed the Bill saying it shouldn’t be passed in its present form and that it ought to be sent for review before the Parliamentary Committee. Anwar Raajhaa, AIADMK from Ramanathapuram, made a forceful plea for not implementing/passing the Bill and termed it as ‘unconstitutional’.
“The Bill could even disturb the secular fabric of the country and the AIADMK won’t accept it in its present form. It should either be abandoned or sent to the review committee. If it comes into force, it would destroy many families. If the husband goes to jail, who would care of the family? The Bill hasn’t done enough research on this count. Many studies conducted in the past about Muslims’ education and economic status never said that triple talaaq caused it.
“More than 2 crores Muslim women have opposed the Bill which is undemocratic and is only an eye-wash rather than addressing the real issue,” he said before the LS passed the Bill with a 245-11 voting of the Members present.
