A recent report has said that almost 90% of households in India use cleaner cooking gas. There are about 24.9 crore active domestic LPG connections. Of these, about 22.9 crore are subsidized connections. Double cylinder connections are 11.9 crore in number.
This is being seen as a huge achievement ever since Ujjwala Yojana was launched by the Narendra Modi government. Says economist Arvind Virmani said, "If true, this will lead in due course, to a big improvement in women and children's health and a decrease in deforestation."
Critics are saying that all is not done. "This is access to LPG connections which is not the same as adoption rates. While the Modi govt deserves credit for eliminating a high cost of entry and for precision targeting of households, the high price of refills, among other reasons, continue to be significant impediments to adoption rates."
