The price of the domestic LPG was hiked once again today. As per news reports, the price of a 14.2 kg cylinder is Rs 999.50 per cylinder from Saturday. This is almost Rs 1,000.
On the other hand, the 19-kg commercial cooking gas cylinder is available at Rs 2,356 after a hike of more than Rs 100 a few days ago.
Opposition parties are tearing into the ruling party for the hikes. "BJP government’s much-hyped Ujjwala scheme is meaningless as the price of domestic LPG cylinder has touched Rs 999.50. In the last one year, the government has increased the price by Rs 200," wrote Congress leader Niranjan Patnaik.
"The price of a 14.2 kg domestic LPG cylinder has been hiked by Rs 50. It will now cost Rs 999.50/cylinder. In March 2014, the price used to be Rs 410.5 per cylinder. How can the poor and lower middle class afford this rate? The BJP government's greed will drive them to starvation," wrote another Congress functionary.
Many Netizens are recalling the days when BJP protested against price hikes when the UPA was in power. File photos of Smriti Irani staging a dharna on a road with a cylinder in her hands have been shared widely by social media users.
