Sumanth Ashwin is back on June 10 in the film 'Right Right'. In this exclusive interview to IndiaGlitz, the young actor talks about what made him excited about the script, how it was working with a technician like Manu, who has worked with Kamal Haasan and Mohanlal, when he will start experimenting and more.

What is the film's subject?

It's a suspenseful film like 'Drushyam', the thriller. That's the USP. It's not a journey film just because bus is a character in the story. Journey is only to an extent. The story takes place in a remote village. There is a mystery element which sucks everyone into it. When I heard the script, I was excited because of the suspense element. Playing a conductor felt curious to me.

You are saying there is mystery in the story. So, does the film have a crime angle?

If that is revealed, the kick would be gone. Any mystery film should be kept under the wraps. Watch it in the theatre.

You are seen sporting 'bottu', while Prabhakar is seen wearing cooling glasses. Why this contrast?

Because of the characterization. He is a senior driver who drives to and fro between two villages in Araku. He feels that he is an expert at driving and thus, to suit his attitude, his body language and get-up have been designed likewise. On the other hand, I play a bus conductor who wanted to be a cop. He couldn't become one, but he respects the rulebook. He knows the rules and regulations. At the same time, he is genuine, honest and prays to god everyday. He is intelligent, but not innocent.

You have worked with sensible directors. How was it working with a newcomer like Manu?

I have worked with the likes of Mohankrishna Indraganti, Maruthi, MS Raju, Sai Kiran Adivi and the like. They are proven talent. Manu is someone who gained the confidence of big stars like Mohanlal, Kamal Haasan and Venkatesh. He co-directed Drushyam in Malayalam, Telugu and Tamil. Kamal Haasan used to say that he would want only Manu to tell him dialogues. Such is his track record. He is a very sincere person. Moreover, with a good script in hand, we wanted someone like him to wield the megaphone.

Now that you have been directed by such a director, are we going to see a new Sumanth Ashwin?

Yes, doing the conductor's role is something fresh. I felt it was very new. I think the audience too will find it new.

Where is the place for a love story in this thriller?

A love story was needed. There had to be a soul. Proceedings shouldn't be dry. In a Telugu film, there ought to be comedy, romance, twists, etc. We have to put in all the ingredients. Specifically for 'Right Right', romance was important in the first half. That gives the lead for emotions to blossom in second half.

With films like 'Kshanam' and 'Right Right' coming, do you think the trend of thrillers is here to stay?

I was impressed when I watched 'Kshanam' and 'Drushyam'. The audiences are appreciating such films. I was pretty confident when this script came my way. It's all about how good a film is. On June 10, the audience will decide. I am waiting curiously. We fall in love with the script when a film is being made. But the audiences' verdict is important.

Tell us about the music.

JB has done a great job. He composed the music for my film Lovers. Background music is very important for the second half of our film. It can elevate or damage the film. JB gave the best output in the first attempt itself.

Since you have softcore looks, are you looking at a chocolate boy's image for yourself?

I don't have any rules. In fact, love stories bore me. Since I am young, writers/directors come to me with love stories. I don't have a choice. Once audiences start accepting me in a bigger way, I can start to experiment. Suriya, for example, is experimenting with films like 24 because he has that range. I can't start experimenting from now itself. My producers have to be safe. So, I am trying to do safe films now. When I reach a stage where audiences say, 'His films are generally nice. Let's go watch his movie', I can afford to experiment. An actor should be ready to play any role. Aamir Khan can do a 'Ghajini' and a '3 Idiots'. Likewise, Kamal Haasan can act in a romantic movie, a horror, a comedy or anything.
