Straight Talk – Movies that knocked out critics in 2016

Now that most of the lists celebrating films, heroes, heroines, directors are done with we decided to give credit where it is due. Here is the list of films in 2016 that gave knockout blows to critics, including ours and went on to become hits and even super hits. The Critics (the professionals) shared the bruises with us while the Pretenders (the paid ones) joyfully danced to the beats of Goundamani's immortal "Start the Music".

Jackson Durai

A film that made it quietly to theaters without much fanfare and the reviews were not very flattering, including ours when we summed up "A few laugh raising moments are way short to satisfy the lovers of comedy films". The film made a good return on investments and right now if you are hearing a scary laughter, it is Sibi and dad Sathyaraj with pass book in hand.

Appa

Though critics were unanimous in praising the messages Samuthirakani kept piling up they also felt it was preachy and no one expected this film to have such a long and eventful run at the box office.

Kabali

On the opening day, this one was torn apart, (we are not guilty on this one) but even the best critics in the business had to eat their words and sing a completely different tune a few days later. The Thalaivar fans, gripped by his magic set the box office on fire, turning Kabali' into his best, collection wise.

Dharma Durai

Most critics felt that this well intentioned tale was also a tedious watch. We said "Not Generous Enough" but the audiences, lured by the magical Vijay Sethupathi and his three girls, Tamannaah, Aishwarya Rajesh and Shrusti Dange felt differently. Congrats "Dharma Durai" team on your rare achievement of 100 Days run.

Iru Mugan

We rightly implied that there is nothing more to this film, but "Love", but the audiences also felt that LOVE is everything in this world and showered it on Vikram giving him a much needed boost. The good news is that Vikram is gearing up to pay back the love to fans by delivering at least three films this year.

Remo

All of us loved Sivakarthikeyan's Regina but also felt that the film is way short of a meaningful entertainer. This one went on to become one of the biggest money spinners of 2016 and all we can now say is that 'Remo' is the demo for the magic a good promo can create.
