Regarding the vaccine development for COVID-19, WHO's most recent statement read, "As part of WHO's response to the outbreak, a Research and Development (R&D) Blueprint has been activated to accelerate the development of diagnostics, vaccines and therapeutics for this novel coronavirus. Under WHO's coordination, a group of experts with diverse backgrounds is working towards the development of vaccines against COVID-19. The group makes a call to everyone to follow recommendations to prevent the transmission of the COVID-19 virus and protect the health of individuals."

COVID-19 has claimed the lives of more than 120900 people and infected over 1941000 people across the world. The virus was first identified in Wuhan, Hubei Province, in China. As the death toll and overall cases began rising rapidly across the world, the World Health Organization (WHO) declared a global health emergency and the outbreak has now been labelled a pandemic. A total of 1204 cases have been registered in Tamil Nadu so far, while 10938 cases have been confirmed across India. Tamil Nadu has reported 12 deaths while 365 people have succumbed to the illness across the country.
